The Windows Command Prompt has been around for decades and now, a potential replacement has finally arrived, at least in preview form. Microsoft’s Windows Terminal is now available for testing for anyone who has Windows 10 (with the May update installed) and is an open source terminal application.
Windows Terminal can do what the Command Prompt could only dream of, from the ability to have multiple tabs open, to even adding background images. As a gamer in South Africa, I normally still use the Command Prompt to ping a website to see how my local latency is looking before jumping in to a game, but there are obviously way more uses than simply checking your latency.
Test out Windows Terminal for free on the Microsoft Store page right now by heading here.
So what is Windows Terminal? Well, it was first announced at Build 2019 by Microsoft and is basically a super-charged Command Prompt. Heck, it can even open Command Prompt, PowerShell and Linux Terminals in multiple tabs. A description of Windows Terminal reads:
Keep in mind that this is still a very early version of the tool and that you could run into some bugs. Accessibility options are also not released yet, but this could one day become the new Command Prompt, so it is nice to start testing it out.
Do you still use Command Prompt and for what purposes? Will you be checking out this new tool? Let us know in the comment section below.
