Microsoft is in talks with Sony about Cross-Play

[media:51279]

Cross-Play between Microsoft’s Xbox One console family and Sony’s PS4 and PS4 Pro has been a divisive topic for quite a long time now. Microsoft seems to be pushing the idea and hopes for Cross-Play and for us gamers, having more people to play with does seem like a good idea.

During E3 2017, things didn’t look to be moving smoothly in the direction of Cross-Play between the two console giants. According to a report by Eurogamer, Sony defended their decision to block PS4 Cross-Play with the Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch.

Fast forward to gamescom 2017 going on right now, and we’ve got some positive news to share. Microsoft has confirmed that they are in talks with Sony about possible Cross-Play. The news comes from an interview over at GameReactor, where the head of Xbox Games Marketing at Microsoft, Aaron Greenberg, had this to say:

“Absolutely, yeah. We're talking to Sony [about crossplay], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we're talking to them and we're hopeful that they'll be supportive of it.” – Source

That does sound great in theory, as uniting a game’s community across platforms will surely bolster the player base and of course, make finding a match in your favourite multiplayer game even faster. That's if everything goes according to Microsoft’s plans.

At the time of writing, there is no indication if Sony will indeed open up their PS4 ecosystem for cross-play with Microsoft. However, it is good to know that the two console giants are in talks with each other about cross-play.

What do you think about the idea of cross-play and is it something you are hoping for? Let us know in the comment section below.
