When Sony announced Death Stranding at E3 this year, it left us more confused than anything else. Sure, we’re all excited about Kojima’s first game as an independent developer, and we dig Norman Reedus, but what was that all about? A baby, a naked man, lots of dying fish, and a very sad song. The confusion only made us more curious about the game, and it is, after all, Hideo Kojima, so we expect a certain level of artistry.
Thankfully, Kojima finally allowed us a peek inside his genius by way of dropping a few things about the game during his Tokyo Games Show presentation. Herewith a summary of The Who’s summary of IGN’s Kojima TGS Presentation.
Death Stranding – Basics
- Open-world action game
- Allows players a “degree of freedom”
- Will have Online elements
- Players will connect “in a fundamentally new way”
- 4K resolution, so we can assume it will be a PS4 Pro title
- Will include HDR support
Death Stranding – The Title
- Meaning of title – Relates to the term “Cetacean stranding” – the term for describing when whales strand themselves on land.
- He also explained that “This title refers to something from another world stranding in our world.”
- Strand in psychological terms means “twisted threads and bonds.”
- The “story, game and world view – it’s all connected by strands.”
Death Stranding – The Rod & The Rope
- In early times, man used a rod to keep danger away, and a rope to catch valuable things
- Rope symbolizes “cooperation”
- Rod symbolizes “competitive”
- With Death Stranding, Kojima wants to create a new kind of game where players are connected with rope and rod elements
Kojima ended his TGS presentation with the following:
We are an Indie studio, and yet, we want to prove that Indie studios can actually create AA world-class AA masterpieces.
