We knew this was coming, the Xbox One X launch is looming on the horizon and Microsoft are prepping their games for 4K support. One of these, if not the only one we know about that will run at true native 4K at the moment is Forza Motorsport 7. Microsoft has promised that the game will not only run at true 4K, but it will also boast higher 4K textures to accompany this higher resolution. What this means is that you will have to download these textures if you want to experience the true 4K Forza 7.
This, however, comes at a cost. We hope that along with your fancy 4K TV and your Xbox One X you also have fibre as the day one update for Forza Motorsport 7 that contains the 4K textures is coming in at 50GB. The main game itself is also a whopper as it will be 45GB. Disc owners will then only need to download the 50GB update if they want to get these higher resolution textures, and if you are downloading the digital version then you can also choose whether or not you want the 50GB update installed.
In a way, this system works as it is completely up to you whether or not you want to grab the download on launch or wait until the Xbox One X before you do. Turn 10 explains on their blog that the download is free and completely optional. It is also the only way to make these textures available as a standard Blu-Ray disc can only hold 45GB of data on it, so it is basically half of the game's final installation size.
Ever since we announced Forza 7, we’ve called this our biggest game, and the numbers bear it out: more than 700 cars at launch, 32 of the world’s greatest tracks (our largest lineup ever), a massive career in the Forza Driver’s Cup, and of course a huge list of ever-changing multiplayer and competitive modes that will keep players busy no matter their skill level or driving preferences. This is the largest game we’ve ever released in terms of sheer footprint size as well. The Xbox One game will be approximately 95 GB at launch. Just about 45 GB of that contained on the Blu-ray disc. The remainder will be available to download for free on September 29.
So there you have it. We all hope that you have at least 100GB free on your Xbox One and Xbox One X to experience Forza Motorsport 7 in its 4K 60FPS glory, but if not you still have a while before the X releases to find an external HDD to do so. Take a look at the stunning 4K launch trailer below.
