Ubisoft Will Not Go Back to Creating Shorter Games

Ubisoft

If you enjoyed the size and scale of the past two previous Assassin’s Creed games then you are in for a treat. It seems Ubisoft plans on keeping its upcoming games just as big as the feedback has been nothing but positive.

Speaking to gamesindustry.biz, CEO Yves Guillemot said “no” to the question whether or not the company will ever return to games the size of say, Assassin’s Creed Unity. Compared to last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, Unity took around 15 hours to complete while Odyssey over 100 hours now with its expansions.

“Our goal is to make sure you can have a Unity within an Odyssey,” said Guillemot. “If you want to have a story of 15 hours, you can have it, but you can also have other stories. You live in that world and you pursue what you want to pursue. You have an experience, many Unity-like experiences.”

Yves Guillemot believes a 60-hour average playtime for a video game is getting a lot from your investment. A lot more than ever before in the Assassin’s Creed series. That is not to say the studio will never make shorter games again. Some franchises simply won’t work as giant open-world games, for example, Rayman, and Splinter Cell.

Of course, we have yet to see or hear anything about those two Ubisoft franchises that have been missing for a couple of years now. Splinter Cell especially has not had a release since 2013.

In one way this approach is great as the value for money will deliver hours of endless content to players. However, there’s nothing wrong with having a great action-packed video game with a strong story that lasts 15 hours. You then clean up some side quests and call it a day. I honestly cannot go back to Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey these days as there’s just too much to do.

Let us know – Would you want large giant open-world games from Ubisoft or do you prefer the shorter Assassin’s Creed titles.
