The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel Teased

Nintendo has confirmed the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, teasing it at their Nintendo E3 2019 Direct Treehouse presentation. While no new gameplay was necessarily shown, the cinematic does reveal the same art style of the first beloved game, albeit with a much darker tone.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched alongside the Nintendo Switch in early 2017, and has since garnered numerous Game of the Year awards. It wouldn’t be long before we’d see a follow-up. Nintendo confirmed the sequel today as the final announcement in their Treehouse presentation.

The trailer has an ominous tone to it, with Link and Princess Zelda exploring some ruins, coming across what appears to be the birth of a new evil in Hyrule. While it could be another Ganondorf, we believe it might be something entirely new. That was all that was teased in the trailer, which also showed some haunting imagery. A mummified corpse with a strange sigil; thick vines spreading across the lands; Zelda and Link looking understandably frightened; and a note from Nintendo at the end of the trailer saying “The sequel to Legend of Zelda: Breath is in development.” The trailer also gives off an eerie atmosphere. Quite frankly, it’s reminiscent of the darker Majora’s Mask. While it couldn’t be related, this is also a possibility to consider.

It seems like we’ll have to wait a while until we hear more information, as Nintendo did not share any more details apart from the initial reveal. However, it’s good to know that a sequel to one of the biggest games of the decade is coming. Fans of The Legend of Zelda also have Link’s Awakening to look forward to this September.
