Dubbed as the gaming laptop for those casual gamers seeking great performance in an attractive device, the brand new Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop announced at CES 2018 is a 15-inch mini monster that makes use of AMD’s latest mobile graphics chipsets.
Packing an AMD Radeon RX560 graphics chipset and the latest AMD Ryzen processor, the Nitro 5 is almost identical to last year’s iteration of the range but has a few new internal changes. Last year’s Nitro range came with only Nvidia chipsets mainly the GTX 1050Ti and the switch to AMD could be due to them being cheaper to make and build into devices, AMD’s main selling point for their new mobile range.
The Nitro 5 will come in different builds mainly with bigger and smaller SSDs and more RAM but the maxed out model can support a 512GB SSD and up to 32GB of DDR 4 RAM. The design is pretty much the same as the past with a laser-cut chassis and the black and red we have come to know from Acer’s gaming range. It comes with a 15.6-inch full HD IPS display, a front-facing HD camera and Dolby Audio speakers backed by Acer’s TrueHarmony tech. As for ports and other specs, the laptop has USB Type-C, HDMI 2.0, 802.11ac WiFi and of course a Gigabit Ethernet. It also has a backlit keyboard. The device will have NitroSense preinstalled on it which is a program that lets users monitor CPU and GPU performance while CoolBoost lets you control fan speeds.
In short, the Acer Nitro 5 is a great entry-level gaming laptop that does not cost a fortune either. Currently, the Nvidia 1050Ti model released last year is retailing for R13,999 which is not half bad for a gaming laptop with such power. While it is not as powerful as say, the upcoming Acer Predator Triton that has a GTX 1080, it is a fraction of the cost. I, for one, would consider this when in the market for a gaming laptop. There is no local pricing for this device yet but it is set to release in the coming months. As the GTX 1050TI model went for R13,999 we can expect the price to be around the same.
