Sony Pulls Spider-Man Films Away From Marvel – Official Statement Released

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Don’t expect to see a new Spider-Man movie anytime soon as Sony and Marvel failed to come to an agreement in regards to the profit share of the character.

For those who don’t know, Sony holds the license to the Spider-Man films and the previous MCU releases were thanks to Sony going into partnership with Marvel to have the character in the films.

Sony does have big plans for the Spider-Man films in the future

Far From Home could see the end of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Deadline reports Disney asked that all future films be 50 / 50 coproductions between Disney and Sony.

As of now, Sony gives Marvel 5% of all gross box-office revenue from the Spider-Man films and if Disney sees its agreement come into action, would mean a lot more for the company. Spider-Man: Far From Home made over $1 billion at the box office which granted Disney over $50 million.

The disagreement saw Marvel’s President Kevin Feige pull out of the partnership but Sony believes the series, as it stands now with actor Tom Holland and director Jon Watts, is enough to keep the series’ momentum going even without Marvel being involved. Watts directed the latest Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home.

All previous Spider-Man appearances in the MCU were thanks to this agreement between Sony and Marvel and even though the character is Marvel-created, Sony owns the film rights. Marvel is pretty much screwed unless they agree on something going forward.

Sony does have big plans for the Spider-Man films in the future. A Venom sequel; Kraven the Hunter films; an Into the Spider-Verse sequel; and a Disney+ Spider-Man show are all currently in the works.

Sony released a statement in regards to the Kevin Feige involvement.

Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live-action Spider-Man film.”

We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
