Captain Marvel Tops the South African Box Office Top 10 for a Third Week in a Row

Captain Marvel is giving everyone who doubted the first female-lead Marvel movie a photon blast in the face. It’s been dominating the South African box office for three weeks in a row, beating new entries into the South African box office top 10 like Cold Pursuit, Escape Room and Destroyer.

Captain Marvel is also the highest grossing movie currently on the South African box office top 10, earning R31 611 992 domestically to date.

Now, let’s get to the top 10 movies at the box office for the weekend of 22 to 24 March 2019 in South Africa.

10. Destroyer

Nicole Kidman stars in this American crime drama directed by Karyn Kusama. Nicole Kidman’s physical transformation is pretty impressive.

9. LEGO Movie 2

LEGO Movie 2 continues to slide down the South African box office, never really getting a grip. This sequel stars Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks. and Will Arnett. It promises to be a laugh and fun for the whole family.

8. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral

Moving down from number 4 on the South African box office to number 8, is Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral. The family’s back together, but things are not what they seem and soon turns into a hilarious madness. The movie sees Tyler Perry reprising his role as Madea and Cassi Davis and Patrice Lovely join the cast, too.

7. Fighting With My Family

Fighting With My Family is a true story following the lives of a family trying to make a living from wrestling together. The family’s two children, Paige (portrayed by Florence Pugh) and Zak (portrayed by Jack Lowden) get an opportunity to try out for WWE, which sets off a sweet and hilarious story about the bonds of family. Nick Frost and Lena Heady also star in this movie which debuted on the South African box office last week at number 6.

6. Escape Room

Making its South African box office debut, Escape Room is one for the thriller fans. The movie follows a group of strangers who are required to escape various life-threatening rooms to survive.

5. How To Train Your Dragon: Hidden Worlds

Continuing to soar on the South African box office top 10 is the third instalment in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise. Dean DeBlois returns to direct, with Jay Baruchel returning to voice Hiccup and America Ferrera voices the role of Astrid.

4. What Men Want

This gender-swap remake of the 2000 movie What Women Want, stars Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan. It held the top spot for two weeks in a row before it was dethroned by the Captain Marvel movie, which has now been dominating the South African box office top spot for three consecutive weeks.

3. Cold Pursuit

Liam Neeson stars in this action movie making its South African box office debut. Someone made the mistake of messing with Liam Neeson’s on-screen son, and after his son is murdered, he seeks revenge.

2. Wonder Park

Not managing to take the top spot with its box office debut last week, Wonderpark maintains its second place spot. This sweet family-friendly film follows the story of June (voiced by Brianna Denski) who tries to save an amusement park.

1. Captain Marvel

We loved the Captain Marvel movie, and it seems audiences are too. The Captain Marvel movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel and was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The movie is a soaring success worldwide too, bringing in a massive $500 million during its opening weekend, and now having made over $900 million in total so far.
