Shrek is one of everyone’s favourite green ogres. Even if you have never watched the movies before, you have seen him in all his swamp glory alongside Donkey and Puss…..in Boots. The final Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After released in 2010 with a Puss in Boots sequel, Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves set to release in late 2019.
Well, it seems that the entire Shrek franchise is going to get a reboot according to Variety as Illumination CEO and Despicable Me producer Chris Meledandri revealed he is looking into revisiting the properties.
While Chris does not want to revamp the franchise, he confirmed that he would like to maintain the original voice cast from the films which include Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Antonia Banderas as Puss in Boots.
“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”
Meledandri cannot confirm if this reboot will be a sequel to the Shrek franchise or take place before everything else but he is confident that it will be only a matter of time before we are all sitting in the theatre watching another Shrek movie. A reboot also means it will go back to its roots and perhaps follow the traditional comedy and plot that made the first film so great. Let’s be honest, after the second movie it kind of fell off the horse wagon a bit.
Illumination’s next film, The Grinch, opens in cinemas this December in SA.
