New Shazam Movie Beats Captain Marvel for the Top Spot on the SA Box Office

Captain Marvel held strong by topping the South African box office top 10 for 4 weeks in a row. But now, another superhero has swooped in to steal the top spot. The new Shazam movie officially opened on Friday and it stole the show, being the number one movie in the country for the weekend of 5 to 7 April  2019.

Captain Marvel continues to be the highest grossing movie currently on the South African box office top 10, earning R42 127 174 domestically to date.

10. Fighting With My Family

Fighting With My Family is a true story following the lives of a family trying to make a living from wrestling together. The family’s two children, Paige (portrayed by Florence Pugh) and Zak (portrayed by Jack Lowden) get an opportunity to try out for WWE, which sets off a sweet and hilarious story about the bonds of family. Nick Frost and Lena Heady also star in this movie which debuted on the South African box office three weeks ago.

9. Hotel Mumbai

Making its South African box office top 10 debut last week is Hotel Mumbai. This thriller was directed by Anthony Maras and is based on the 2008 Mumbai attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in India.

8. Cold Pursuit

Liam Neeson stars in this action movie which made its South African box office top 10 debut two weeks ago at number 3. Someone made the mistake of messing with Liam Neeson’s on-screen son, and after his son is murdered, he seeks revenge.

7. Us

Slipping from its number 6 debut to number 7 on the South African box office top 10 is Jordon Peele’s new horror Us. This twisted tale stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke. If you love to be scared and freaked out by movies, then this one is for you.

6. Love Lives Here

Love Lives Here is a local romantic comedy staring Thabethe, Lungile Radu, Motlatsi Mafatshe and Zola Nombona. A romance novelist is about to give up on the idea of a perfect love story for her own life when she meets someone who changes her life.

5. What Men Want

Moving from its number 4 spot on the South African box office top 10 to number 5, is this gender-swap remake of the 2000 movie What Women Want. The movie stars Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan. It held the top spot for two weeks in a row before it was dethroned by the Captain Marvel movie.

4. Wonder Park

Slowly making its way down the top 10 after holding the number 2 spot for 2 weeks in a row is Wonder Park. This sweet family-friendly film follows the story of June (voiced by Brianna Denski) who tries to save an amusement park.

3. Dumbo

Not managing to dethrone Captain Marvel for the top spot last week, Dumbo debuted at number 2 and has now moved down to number 3. This live-action adaptation of the classic Disney movie stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, and Danny DeVito.

2. Captain Marvel

The Captain Marvel movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel and was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and held the top spot in South Africa for four consecutive weeks, before now being dethroned by the new Shazam movie.

1. Shazam

The new Shazam movie is this week’s number one movie at the South African box office. Starring Zachary Levi as the title character, this is one of the most lighthearted DC movies released, maybe ever. Not only is Shazam a fun superhero movie it also has a lot of action and even some heartfelt moments. It also features some fun video game references, which gamers will love to spot.
