Have two hours to kill at work? Maybe give Sony’s full-length documentary “Raising Kratos” a watch. The feature film follows the five-year challenge Santa Monica Studios undertook to recreate one of gaming’s most iconic characters from God of War III to God of War 2017.
The lengthily free-to-watch film is now live on YouTube and is worth the watch if you have played the game and want a little insight to the development roadmap, challenges and excitement that went on behind the scenes during the recreation of Kratos and the revamp of the God of War series.

Raising Kratos documents the five-year, herculean effort to reinvent one of the greatest stories in gaming, God of War. Facing an unknown future, Santa Monica Studio took a massive risk, fundamentally changing their beloved franchise and re-establishing their rightful place in video game history. More than just a “making of,” this cinematic journey of second chances rooted in family, sacrifice, struggle and doubt follows game director Cory Barlog and those who chase perfection in art and storytelling. Witness the incredible defeats, the unpredictable outcomes and the down-to-the-wire tension on full display in this true-life redemption story.
But the film
is so much more than just a movie about a game, it gives us important insight into the struggles of game development as some of it touches on layoff in the studio and the darkest of times when the game just seemed too ambitious for its day and age. Raising Kratos is a fantastic development film and something I highly recommend everyone watches. Even if you are not a God of War fan, this will make you one.
