It's been nearly a decade of one Kingdom Hearts III tease after the other, and last night Square Enix released two more; a gameplay trailer and the theme song trailer. Both were shown at Japan's D23 Expo, and it is absolutely gorgeous. However, the one thing we all want to know remains a mystery … the Kingdom Hearts III release date.
Kingdom Hearts III's theme song, “Don't Think Twice” performed by the talented Utada Hikaru shows some of the new characters we'll meet like Monster Inc's Boo, Mike Wazowski, and James P. Sullivan. We also see a few familiar faces like Sora, Donald Duck, and King Mickey, and of course, as their Monster Inc. counterparts.
The video ends with an interesting scene, Sora explains to King Mickey that he has to leave the Keyblade as he “can't use it anymore” but he is leaving it in a secure place “in case the other me needs it”.
The second video introduces the Monster Inc. cast as well as some gameplay. From a previous announcement we know that the first Pixar-based world that includes the Toy Story cast features in Kingdom Hearts III. The video also introduces Little Mermaid's Ariel as she gets summoned by Sora. The highlight of the video is the gameplay which shows of a series of combat scenarios in different worlds.
From a previous interview with Final Fantasy developer and Kingdom Hearts designer, Tetsuya Nomura, we know that the AI has been “upgraded” and will work as a team to take down Sora and his comrades. There will also be more choices in combat, some of which we can now see in the new video. Lastly, the video also shows the return of Vanitas as antagonist, another keyblader wielder, and the apprentice of Master Xehanort.
Kingdom Hearts III will release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
