According to gaming retailer, GameStop, the next generation of gaming consoles are expected to be launched pretty soon. The retailer expects current consoles sales to drop significantly in 2019 as people prepare for the next-gen consoles to hit the market. The retailer specifically predicts new consoles to be released from the likes of Sony and Microsoft.
During an earnings call, GameSpot CFO Rob Lloyd has stated that
With respect to new hardware, as we get closer to the end of the current console cycle for Xbox and PlayStation, we expect demand to decline as some customers choose to wait on the sidelines in anticipation of acquiring the next generation of innovative consoles.
The CFO didn’t mention Nintendo, so it’s safe to assume that GameSpot was specifically referring to next-gen consoles expected to be released from Sony and Microsoft.
Microsoft is expected to release its next-gen consoles at E3 2019, taking place from 11 to 15 June. It’s also been rumoured that the company is planning on releasing an all-digital, disc-less version of the Xbox One S this year. Sony isn’t going to E3 2019, marking it as the first time in 24 years the company won’t have a presence at the expo.
Aside from its predictions in terms of consumer behaviour and the expectations of next-gen consoles to be released by Sony and Microsoft very soon, the retailer also reported on earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter. The retailer noted a $673 million full-year loss of earning for 2018. The retailer went on to report fourth-quarter sales of $3.1 billion, which is a 7.6% decrease from the same period for last year.
Despite reporting on a loss, the retailer’s Executive Chairman, Dan DeMatteo believes the company is going to be growing under the new leadership of CEO, George Sherman.
We are excited to move forward under George’s leadership as we refine our strategic direction and implement several initiatives under development to strengthen the company for the future and drive sustainable growth and profitability.
Whether GameSpot’s predictions about the next-gen consoles will turn out to be true, remains to be seen. After E3 takes place, we’re hoping to have a better idea of what the future holds in terms of console upgrades.
