The PS5 Will Have Some “Special Sauce” According to AMD’s CEO

PS5

Last month Sony surprised us all by revealing the first official details of the next-gen PlayStation and it sounds absolutely incredible, boasting a super-fast SSD, Ray Tracing support as well as a third-gen Ryzen CPU and a custom Navi GPU. The latter, a custom Navi GPU, is what is of the utmost importance and that’s where so much of the graphical power of the PS5 will come from. That is also where the PS5’s “special sauce” will likely come into play, which AMD’s CEO Lisa Su has mentioned.

The 7nm Navi GPUs will launch in the third quarter of 2019 even though the PS5 won’t release in the next 12 months. That’s because you can’t just pop a GPU chip into a console since there is a lot more technical stuff going on and the custom console chips push the boundaries of what is possible.

No one except those working on the PS5’s hardware knows what this “special sauce” is but I suspect it could be their Ray Tracing implementation, which is known to be extremely power-hungry and challenge even the biggest, most-expensive graphics cards out there.

AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, spoke briefly about the PS5, commenting on the company’s excitement for the next-gen PlayStation.

What we have done with Sony is really architect something for their application, for their special sauce. It’s a great honor for us. We’re really excited about what the next generation PlayStation will do.

Lisa Su also expects 2019 to be a “big year” for AMD and explained that gaming is a long-term and “good secular” growth market for the company.
