It was with a heavy heart that we reported over the weekend that Telltale Games is shutting down. Telltale gave gamers some amazing story-driven experiences, one of the best being The Walking Dead. At the time, it was being reported that Telltale would only finish their work for Netflix on a Minecraft project. However, there is now some hope that Telltale might finish The Walking Dead.
This should be very good news for those who bought the final season of The Walking Dead, however, one has to remember that people make games. With over 200 workers already laid off and reports of no severance packages for these employees, not everyone is happy.
Telltale might finish The Walking Dead
Quite honestly, I was happy when I saw the news that Telltale might finish The Walking Dead. In a post on Twitter, Telltale explained that there are potential partners stepping forward to help finish the final season. The Twitter post reads:
Hi everyone, we have a Walking Dead update for you. Multiple potential partners have stepped forward to express interest in helping to see The Final Season through to completion. While we can’t make any promises today, we are actively working towards a solution that will allow episodes 3 and 4 to be completed and released in some form. In the meantime, episode 2 will release tomorrow across all platforms as planned. We hope to have answers for your other questions soon.
While gamers who would love nothing more than to see the final season come to life should be very happy, not everyone is. As mentioned earlier, we should always remember that real people make games. This brings me to some outrage from some members of the gaming community.
The outrage is all about the employees who were laid off and that they should rather get paid severance. The idea is that Telltale should use the potential funds that would be used to finish The Walking Dead to pay severance to employees.
Replying to the news that Telltale might finish The Walking Dead, Game Workers Unite spoke out about this issue on Twitter, calling it disgusting:
This is disgusting. Pay your 250+ previous employees’ severance.
Even though I would love to see the final season come to life, it is hard to argue against the needs of ex Telltale employees.
