SA box office

The 91ste Acadamy Awards ceremony took place over the past weekend. Some of the big Oscar winners are currently still showing at the South African cinemas, so fans are lucky enough to catch them on the big screen. Before we get to the top 10 movies, Aquaman is currently still the highest grossing movie on the South African box office circuit, grossing R 54 528 126 to date.

Here are the top 10 movies, currently at the South African box office, with some big Oscar winners also making the list.

10. Glass

The new one from the legendary director, M Night Shyamalan. Glass continues the intriguing stories started in the 2000 movie, Unbreakable starring Samuel L Jackson and Bruce Willis and Split which was released in 2016, starring James Mcavoy.

9. Green Book

Winner of this year’s Best Picture, Green Book is one of the Oscar winners you have to check out before it leaves the cinema circuit. It stars Viggo Mortensen, who was nominated for Best Actor (Rami Malek won for his performance as Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody). The movie also stars Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley, who took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role.

8. Matwetwe

This local movie was directed by Kagiso Lediga and stars Tebatsa Mashishi. It’s a coming-of-age adventure and is still holding on to its spot in the top 10.

7. Bohemian Rhapsody

Rami Malek stole the show as one of the night’s big Oscar winners. He walked away with the Best Actor award for his role as the late and larger-than-life Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. It held the number 7 spot at the South African box office last week, as well.

6. Aquaman

Aquaman continues to make waves at the box office. The movie, starring Jason Momoa as the title character, has been keeping it steady on the top 10 for a few weeks now, and you can still go and check it out before it leaves the South African cinema circuit.

5. Princess and the Dragon

One for the whole family to enjoy (and not one of the big Oscar winners). Princess and the Dragon is an animation movie which follows the adventure of Princess Barbara. On her 7th birthday, she comes across a magical book, which transports her to an enchanted world.

4. The Upside

He might not have hosted the Oscars as he was initially slated to do, but at least Kevin Hart has a movie in the top 10 at the South African box office. Directed by Neil Burger, this comedy starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston follows the funny tale of an unlikely friendship.

3. Alita: Battle Angel

The movie that took Robert Rodriques and James Cameron close to two decades to make is definitely worth checking out at the cinemas. Perhaps it will be one of the big Oscar winners at next years awards.

2. How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The third movie in the How to Train your Dragon franchise didn’t manage to hold onto its top spot for two weeks in a row and is this week’s number 2 movie at the South African box office.

1. What Men Want

This gender-swap remake of the 2000 movie What Women Want, stars Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan.

Which of the Oscar winners are you gonna check out at the box office?
