Red Dead Redemption 2 is built using Rockstar’s in-house RAGE engine which stands for “Really Awesome Game Engine”, not really, it is “Rockstar Advanced Game Engine” and they aren’t lying. Red Dead Redemption 2 looks superb and could be one of the most visually captivating games of this generation. But that is not why you are here. You are here to find out which of the four consoles on the market run Red Dead Redemption 2 at its best. According to Digital Foundry, each one holds up pretty well across the game but there are a clear winner and loser here.

According to the detailed analysis of the game, Red Dead Redemption 2 looks the best on the Xbox One X with a clear native 4K rendering technique used across the board while the PS4 Pro makes use of a 1920×2160 resolution which is then checkerboard rendered up to 4K.

When it comes to the standard consoles, the Xbox One and Xbox One S come in right at the bottom of the competition at 864p, Yes, the Xbox One S renders Red Dead Redemption 2 at just over 720p which is pretty low. As for the standard PS4, it maintains its 1080p resolution throughout the game.

When it comes to framerate, Red Dead Redemption 2 is locked at 30fps across all four consoles and it never goes over that. However, Digital Foundry revealed that at times the framerate did drop across all consoles. This was present throughout busy towns as the frame rate would drop to 25-30FPS at specific scenes. There is also one very specific cutscene where the game’s framerate suffers drastically with the Xbox One X dropping to 21FPS but this only happens during this one scene. It could be due to all the rendering taking place at one time or just buggy.

So there you have it. The Xbox One X is the best place to play Red Dead Redemption if you are looking for a native 4K resolution while the PS4 Pro is just as good. The small differences between resolution and render techniques are not going to be seen unless you really go looking for them. Keep in mind that Sony does have exclusive content rights for the game so choose wisely what console you pick the game up on today.
