Red Dead Online Gets a Surprising Battle Royale Mode – Now Live

Red Dead Online beta progress

It seems like these days every other game has a battle royale mode or is planning to add one in the future. With the Red Dead Online beta now underway, it was quite surprising to see Rockstar also jump on the battle royale train, as they have generally not followed industry trends as much as others.

There’s a lot to do in the Red Dead Online Beta, but the battle royale mode actually sounds like one of the most exciting features. Before you make plans to tar-and-feather me for making that statement, hear me out. This isn’t your average battle royale mode and it seems pretty awesome. The mode is called “Make it Count” and sees 16 to 32 players compete in an ever-shrinking area of play. What sets this mode apart is that players have very limited weapons, so no snipers.

The Make it Count mode in Red Dead Online only allows players to carry a bow with a few arrows or throwing knives. That is sure to already up the ante and make it a very intense experience, especially considering how nerve-wracking it was in the single-player campaign to just aim and hit an arrow effectively. Then, there are also three different maps in the playlist for the mode, namely Tall Trees, Strawberry and Stillwater Creek.

The official description of Red Dead Online’s Battle Royale mode reads:

A true test of resourcefulness in two game modes: use nothing but a bow and a handful of arrows or throwing knives to be the last one standing. With a gradually shrinking player area, there’s nowhere to run.

This mode is part of the Showdown Series playlist (16 players) and there is also a Showdown Series Large playlist, with 32 players competing. Then, there’s also a race series which sees players race on horseback. There’s quite a lot to do in the Showdown Series playlist, with multiple other modes. Check out the official descriptions of these modes below.

Shootout & Team Shootout:

Classic gunfight modes with unlimited lives. Compete to rack up the most kills before the timer runs out. Sudden death will trigger in the event of a tie: whoever gets the first kill wins.

Most Wanted:

A tactical race to the top. Every kill pushes you up the scoreboard, but watch out: the closer to the top you are, the more points everyone else gets for killing you.

Hostile Territory:

Work in teams to control the land. Capture a territory to start racking up points: the team with most points wins – or you can win outright by capturing every territory.

Name your Weapon:

Demonstrate your personal specialty in this free-for-all or team based match: the trickier the weapon you use to land the killing blow, the more points you get.

Have you tried out the Red Dead Online beta yet and what do you think about the concept of the battle royale mode for the game? Let us know in the comment section below.
