Over the past weekend, Pokémon GO studio Niantic announced that they’ve expanded by purchasing the whole Evertoon team. We assumed Niantic had big plans to grow Pokémon GO (which they could still do), but it now seems the focus could be on the development of a brand new Augmented Reality game called, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
Niantic is developing the Harry Potter-inspired game in partnership with Warner Bros, and according to the description, it will have gameplay mechanics similar to that of Pokémon GO. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will “reveal that magic is all around us” and will again see ‘Wizards’ (Trainers) exploring “real-world neighborhoods and cities across the globe,” learn spells and battle ” legendary beasts.” Like Pokémon GO there will also be a Raid or co-op feature that will see players “take down powerful enemies.” Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
“At Niantic, our goal is to leverage technology to create real-world experiences that help people to discover the wonderful and often magical parts of the world around them,” said John Hanke, founder, and CEO of Niantic, Inc. “The beloved Harry Potter stories have captured imaginations worldwide for more than 20 years and soon we’ll turn the fantasy into augmented reality, allowing fans and their friends to become wizards and witches.”
“With this game, we are allowing the passionate, worldwide fan base to experience J.K. Rowling’s deeply powerful and imaginative universe in a new, truly immersive way,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “It is wonderful to have Niantic’s remarkable augmented reality expertise as we develop this incredibly rich wizarding world for players to explore in their everyday lives.”
Niantic didn’t announce a release date, only that more news will follow in 2018.
