Backwards Compatibility has always been the one feature that I would have loved to see on the PS4. It is definitely something Xbox has done right this generation. Now, a recently uncovered Sony patent is hinting at an upcoming feature. Yes, PlayStation 5 Backwards Compatibility might be a real thing as many are speculating.
PlayStation 5 Backwards Compatibility
First off, please remember to take information like this with a bit of salt as Sony has not officially revealed a Backwards Compatibility feature nor even officially announced the PlayStation 5. Further, just because a patent sounds a lot like Backwards Compatibility, doesn’t mean that Sony has to use said patent.
Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it. The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers. The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.
That sure does sound a lot like Backwards Compatibility to me. Keep in mind that nothing is confirmed. I, for one, think it is too late for the PS4 to suddenly get the feature. However, PS4 games could very likely be Backwards Compatible with the PS5 when the console finally releases.
