New Dune Games Are Finally Being Created

New Dune Games

It’s been 18 years since we last had the pleasure of playing a Dune game and that’s when you count Frank Herbert’s Dune from 2001, which I personally don’t, as for me the series ended with Dune 2000, released over two decades ago in 1998. If you are unfamiliar with the series, the main entries were all RTS experiences based on the 1965 novel Dune, by Frank Herbert. There was even a CCG as well as a movie and more. It is one of the most influential Sci-Fi universes ever created. Now, finally, new Dune games are being created.

It has been a very long wait and for many old-school gamers, Dune might have just been one of their first experiences. The original was such a memorable RTS that sometimes I still dream about those nasty Sandworms. That’s why I am extremely excited to report that three new Dune games will see the light of day.

After Funcom’s fourth-quarter financial report, the CEO Rui Casais, made a follow-up statement, announcing that:

We are very excited to announce an exclusive gaming partnership with Legendary Entertainment to develop a line of video games based on the works of Frank Herbert’s Dune. Dune is one of the world’s best-known science fiction universes and a personal favourite of mine. To work on Dune games is a dream come true for many of us in Funcom.

Further, in another statement, Funcom explained that the partnership as mentioned above is a six-year one to release at least three titles on PC and console platforms. One of the games being planned with fall into the “open world multiplayer” genre and this yet-to-be-announced title will enter pre-production in Funcom’s Oslo studio this year.

With the Sci-Fi world that Frank Herbert created, new Dune games still have so much to explore and so much potential I simply can’t wait to hear more. Hopefully, Funcom won’t mess this one up, as we have waited way too long for a new Dune game as it is.
