PC gamers miss out on a lot of fantastic console exclusives, but now, thanks to a partnership between Epic Games and thatgamecompany, one of the best adventure games ever created will finally come to PC for the first time. Journey will be available to purchase for PC via the newly announced Epic Games Store.
Journey initially release on the PlayStation 3 in March 2012, and on the PlayStation 4 in July 2015. It broke several PlayStation records (was the fastest-selling game at its time on PlayStation) and won a total of 19 awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. It is an exceptional game on so many levels, and I couldn’t be more excited as I’ll be playing it for the first time.
Journey was lauded as the one game everyone should experience, so opening it to a broader audience is something that benefits everyone. Just imagine if more developers follow suit! It is undoubtedly a big step in the right direction for the Epic Games Store as video games availability and exclusivity will be the one thing that will draw PC gamers away from Steam. It’s another plus for the new storefront as Epic announced over the weekend that starting next week, gamers will be able to pick up a free game from the Epic Games Store for a whole year.
It’s difficult to limit Journey to one genre; it’s a puzzle game, a third-person platformer, a single-player and multiplayer experience, but also an art game that takes the player on an incredible adventure. It is packed with emotion, adventure, surprise, and beauty. Many who played it remarked that the game draws the player into such a personal journey that it can be about whatever you want it to be. I’ve watched people play it, and what struck me was the beauty of its simplicity, and the allure of the depths waiting just below the surface. You want to discover its secrets and get lost in its seemingly endless beauty.
The official description on the new Journey PC website describes the game as follows; “Explore the ancient, mysterious world of Journey as you soar above ruins and glide across sands to discover its secrets. Play alone or in the company of a fellow traveler and explore its vast world together. Featuring stunning visuals and a Grammy-nominated musical score, Journey delivers a breathtaking experience like no other.”
Annapurna Interactive is the PC distributor for Journey, there is no release date yet, but I’m hoping that it will form part of the Epic Games Store launch later this month.
