Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is worth a lot of money. It’s reported that he is worth close to a cool $140 billion, making him the richest man alive. Now, after announcing that he and his wife, MacKenzie Turtle, are planning on getting a divorce, Jeff Bezos might have to split his fortune in half as part of his divorce settlements.
Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Turtle met back in 1992, before he became the face of Amazon and he was still a hedge fund manager on Wall Street. Shortly after meeting, the couple got married in 1993. MacKensie Turtle was by his side when he built up Amazon to become the massive global company it is today.
As reported by TMZ, it has now come to light that Jeff Bezos and his wife never entered into a prenuptial contract. Prenuptial contracts, or prenups for short, are similar to South Africa’s antenuptial contracts. Usually, when a couple enters into a contract before they are married (on limited occasions and with special conditions it can take place after they’ve been married), their marriage and divorce will be governed by this contract. In it, a couple can decide how everything gets divided in the event of a divorce as well as agree on other important marital and financial decisions.
When a couple doesn’t have a prenuptial/antenuptial agreement, like Jeff Bezos and his wife apparently don’t have, then their marriage and divorce might be in community of property. What this means, is that MacKenzie Turtle might be eligible to get half of the $140 billion that Jeff Bezos is apparently worth. As Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Turtle will be filing for divorce in the American State of Washington, their marriage and divorce will be regulated by in community of property laws. This means that the likelihood is strong that Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Turtle will have to split their estate in half and divide it up 50/50.
If MacKenzie Turtle ends up getting $70 billion (which is roughly half of what Jeff Bezos is worth) she will become the richest woman on the planet. The current richest woman is Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, who earned the top spot by being the heiress to the L’Oréal company, giving her a net worth of roughly $47 billion.
