This weekend’s VIP demo had some problems for players like, not being able to log in for hours, experiencing frozen loading screens, etc., with the issue apparently spreading to all of EA’s live services.
The biggest issue seems to have been a lack of capacity for players to join the servers. However, lack of adequate servers wasn’t the problem according to Head of BioWare’s Live Service, Chad Robertson, who explained that:
To ensure stability, we intended to manage our servers to match the player population as it grew. Overall, we had excess capacity prepared for population increases, and continue to do so.
That said, what’s important is that all parts of the game work as designed to meet players’ needs, and that did not happen in the opening hours.
He went on to discuss the three main reasons, according to BioWare, why players had issues with the VIP demo over the weekend.
- Platform connections – caused by an increase in players when the Anthem demo was opened on Friday, with BioWare promising to fix these problems.
- Entitlements – these are account flags that grant players things like their pre-order incentives and demo access. During the Anthem demo weekend, a bug was identified where VIP players with a specific combination of entitlements were being blocked from accessing the Anthem demo.
- Infinite loads – Bioware identified this issue during testing, but have admitted that it has come up again for certain players during the Anthem demo weekend.
BioWare has vowed to use the past weekend’s demo as a learning experience and to address the problems that have come up.
“As a token of appreciation” and to apologize to players who experienced issues during the demo, BioWare is giving everyone who participated in the past Anthem demo weekend a new, free Javelin skin at the February launch of the game.
Anthem is set for release on 22 February 2019. Will you be playing?
