Avengers: Endgame Breaks South African Box Office Records, Tops The Top 10

The whole world seems to have gone to watch the final chapter of phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers: Endgame opened this past weekend and not only did it top the South African box office, but it also broke numerous records that were held by 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Endgame ended up making over $1 billion globally during its opening weekend. In South Africa, the 22nd Marvel movie in the MCU took in over R34 million. Over 377 000 attendees assembled to watch the movie during its opening weekend, which included sneak previews on Thursday, 25 April.

Friday’s premiere saw over 100 000 attendees flock to the South African cinemas to take in over R9.2 million, making it the biggest opening day in South African box office history.

Endgame is officially also the number one movie on the South African top 10, beating out last week’s local movie that debuted at number one. Before we get to the rest of the top 10, Captain Marvel continues to be the highest grossing movie currently on the South African box office, earning R48 010 891 domestically to date.

10. Dog’s Way Home

When a dog and her owner become separated, she has to find her way back to him. On her adventure, she encounters other beings, whose lives she changes forever.

9. Pet Sematary

Pet Sematary is a thriller based on the book by Stephen King and stars Jason Clarke as Dr. Louis Creed who, with his wife (portrayed by Amy Seimetz) and two young children move to a quieter town in order for them to slow down and reconnect with each other. However, their new home, which is on the edge of a forest, holds dark secrets.

8. Dumbo

This live-action adaptation of the classic Disney movie stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, and Danny DeVito.

7. After

The fan fiction, which turned the One Direction member into a punk version – Hardin Scott -, has become very popular and the movie is sure to capture a few fans. It stars Josephine Langford as Tessa Young and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin as Hardin Scott.

6. The Queen’s Corgi

Making its box office debut last week and moving down one spot this week, is this sweet story about (as the title suggests) the queen’s dog, Rex. Rex is chased out of the palace and needs to find his way home. This animation movie is definitely one to watch with the whole family.

5. Captain Marvel

The Captain Marvel movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel and was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and held the top spot in South Africa for four consecutive weeks, before being dethroned by the Shazam movie.

4. Little

Making its box office debut last week, Little follows the story of tech mogul Jordan Sanders (portrayed by Regina Hall). She’s a pretty hard-hitter, feared by most of her staff. But everything hilariously changes when she is magically transformed into a 13-year-old version of herself.

3. Shazam

Starring Zachary Levi as the title character, this is one of the most lighthearted DC movies released, maybe ever. Not only is Shazam a fun superhero movie it also has a lot of action and even some heartfelt moments. It also features some fun video game references, which gamers will love to spot.

2. Kandasamys – The Wedding

This local movie revolves around two neighbouring families – the Kandasamys and the Naidoos. After Jennifer Kandasamy and Shanthi Naidoo become friends again, their children Jodi and Prishen fall in love and a big wedding gets planned. As weddings can be stressful, lots of hilarious drama ensues.

1. Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame picks up where Infinity War and the end-credit scene in Captain Marvel left off. Thanos (portrayed by Josh Brolin) has become inevitable and has wiped out half of all living creatures in the entire universe. The remaining Avengers are finding it hard to deal with the loss, and mourn with the rest of the world for everyone they have lost.
