Black Panther was a massive success for Marvel. The movie made headlines for having an all-black leading cast, which included Chadwick Bosman as T’Challa aka Black Panther, and for breaking box office record. The movie is making history once again, by receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Black Panther becomes the first movie in the history of the Acadamy Awards to be nominated in the Best Movie category. Other superhero movies – like The Dark Knight (2008) and Wonder Woman (2017) – have come close to being nominated in the Best Picture category, but Black Panther is the first to be officially nominated.
The movie, which was directed by Ryan Coogler, was nominated for 7 Oscars in total, which include:
- Best Picture;
- Best Costume Design – Also making history for her costume design nomination for Black Panther, is Ruth E. Carter. This is the first Oscar nomination for a superhero movie in the Best Costume Design category, which seems odd as the superhero genre is all about costumes.;
- Best Sound Editing;
- Best Sound Mixing;
- Best Original Score;
- Best Original Song; and
- Best Production Design -Hannah Beachler makes Oscar history for being the first black designed to be nominated in the Best Production Design category.
The other 7 movies nominated in the Best Picture category at this year’s Oscars are:
- A Star Is Born;
- Bohemian Rhapsody;
- Green Book;
- The Favourite; and
Black Panther seems to have broken down many barriers in the entertainment industry and is hopefully paving the way for future pioneers.
The Oscars ceremony is set to be held on Sunday, 24 February 2019, when we will learn if Black Panther ends up taking home the golden statue.
This year’s Oscars were supposed to be hosted by Kevin Hart, but he was removed as the host after old homophobic Tweets of his, resurfaced. And no news yet as to who will be this year’s host. The last time the ceremony went without a host was in 1989.
Will you be watching the ceremony and will you be rooting for Black Panther?
