The director of the Dark Souls franchise and President of From Software, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has expressed his desires to possibly create a battle royale game. With Fortnite and Apex Legends being amongst the most popular games ever, it makes sense that From Software is considering future plans to bring out its own battle royal game.
Hidetaka Miyazaki is not only known for his work on the Dark Souls games but is also behind other great games like Bloodborne and the Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice game which is releasing on 22 March 2019. When recently asked about the current popularity of the battle royale game genre, Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that From Software is definitely looking at creating its own battle royale game, but mentioned that it “might be a bit different” to the other battle royale games currently dominating the market.
These [Battle Royale] games are definitely fun. And we’re interested in the patterns they are taking. If we did it, it might be a bit different! But we’re definitely interested and there’s definitely that possibility in the future. We’d love to take a crack at them some day.
Battle royale games are all the rage right now, with even classic games like Tetris going the battle royale route.
However, Hidetaka Miyazaki stressed that the entire gaming industry benefits when there are a variety of different genres of games available. He goes on to explain that, although battle royale games are extremely popular at the moment, other genres of games, like the soon-to-be-released single-player action game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, also has a place.
We do need this diversity in the industry. Regardless of what From Software is doing, we need people making battle royale games and live services and we need people making single-player focussed experiences. We feel that this diversity is what will keep everyone going.
What kind of battle royale game would you like to see from the director of Dark Souls and other great games?
