With Aquaman floating in as the highest grossing DC movie of all time (surpassing the old record-holder, The Dark Knight), it doesn’t come as a major surprise that an Aquaman 2 is reportedly in the works.
Now that we all know that Aquaman 2 is probably, definitely happening, it has been confirmed that James Wan is in talks to possibly step into the director’s role again.
James Wan, who directed the first Aquaman movie, is known for not sticking around for long when it comes to movie franchises. He only directed the first Saw movie, which was released in 2004 and is responsible for creating Billy the Puppet. He also only directed one Fast and Furious movie – Furious 7 in 2015. However, he has returned for some sequels, like The Conjuring (2013) and The Conjuring 2 (2016), as well as both Insidious movies.
Apparently, James Wan will be in the prime position to choose whether he wants to return to direct Aquaman 2, or not. He will oversee who writes the script and once the script for Aquaman 2 is available, he will reportedly decide whether he is the right person for the job. However, reports are saying that James Wan is deeply invested in the Aquaman franchise, so the possibility remains big that he will be on board when the sails set on Aquaman 2.
The filmmaker is deeply invested in the world creation aspect of Aquaman and sees the deep, blue sea as a fantasy setting that can be cinematically comparable to Middle-earth, the Jedi galaxy or the wizarding world of the Harry Potter films. There’s a lot of ocean floor and undersea kingdoms left for Wan explore.
As no script has been written as of yet, we still have very little to go on from what to expect from Aquaman 2. When James Wan was questioned about the possibility of a sequel to the movie that’s making waves, he apparently reluctantly replied, saying only that he is “superstitious about it“.
