Lord of the Rings: Gollum Has Been Announced

Lord of the Rings: Gollum

We all know how Gollum’s story ends, but there is more to the character than just this creepy thing whispering “my precious”. J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy world is so rich with lore and interesting places and one of the characters I’ve always felt we didn’t see enough of is Gollum, also known as Smeagol. If you feel the same way, then you will be very excited to know that Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been announced and will release sometime in 2021.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum, is apparently an action/adventure title with a choice and consequence system, where players take on the role of Gollum. The game is being developed by Daedelic Entertainment and Middle-Earth Enterprises and will be coming to PC as well as “all relevant console platforms at that time”. That last line could point towards Lord of the Rings: Gollum possibly being a next-gen title as well.

The game is probably still in the early stages of development and except for the image at the top of the article, nothing else such as a teaser trailer of a screenshot has even been shown. As reported by PC Gamer, Daedelic’s CEO, Carsten Fichtelmann, did shed some more light on the upcoming title, explaining that:

We already know what famous places we’ll be seeing in Middle-earth when you play the game. We’re concentrating on the character of Gollum, and we’re telling his story before we learn about what happens to him in the books. So it’s definitely new content that we’ll see.

Just like in the films and books, Gollum will have a split personality and this will show in Lord of the Rings: Gollum in what sounds like interesting ways, giving players choice in how they proceed. Mr Fichtelmann explains that:

When you look at our history with storytelling games, it was obvious that we needed to do something where the protagonist has a conflict going on. This is also something you’ll play in the game. You’ll come to decisions you have to make, and you’ll have the two voices talking to you. He may change his mind, and this is a clue about how it will play.

This sounds awesome if you ask me and we will be sure to cover Lord of the Rings: Gollum going forward. Hopefully, the game turns out to be as good as it sounds, because it sounds absolutely fantastic!
