A Ghostbusters revival has been confirmed to be in the works. Jason Reitman has been given the duties of writing and directing a Ghostbusters revival.
The original Ghostbusters movie was released in 1984 and became an instant classic. A sequel followed five years later. Ghostbusters II was a huge success, breaking a bunch of box office records when it was released in 1989.
Now, it’s been confirmed that a Ghostbusters revival is in the works. Apparently, this new Ghostbusters revival movie will be set in the world after Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II.
You may remember that an all-female Ghostbusters reboot was released in 2016, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. The movie was a moderate success, but it doesn’t seem to have been big enough to truly reboot the franchise.
Interestingly, Jason Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, directed both the original and the sequel. This means that Jason Reitman has literally grown up with the franchise, and is probably the best person to direct a Ghostbusters revival movie. Ivan Reitman will return to be a producer for the Ghostbusters revival movie. Jason Reitman considers himself to be one of the first Ghostbusters fans, and has confirmed that the movie is not a reboot.
I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.
Sony has slated the movie for release in mid-2020, with production to start very soon.
No news yet as to whether the original cast will return to reprise their roles for the Ghostbuster revival. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and the late Harold Ramis starred in the 1984 original and reprised their roles for Ghostbusters II in 1989.
