Fortnite superstar and Twitch celebrity, Ninja, is getting a 12-hour livestream spot in Time Square to usher in the new year. The event kicks off at 7 PM ET and runs until 7 AM ET the following day.
YouTubers, streamers, and celebrities will join Ninja for a Fortnite battle royale showdown as they ring in 2019 across various time zones. Seems New Year’s countdowns are out and gaming showdowns are in. The news was announced during a TwitchCon stream.
When I started in gaming, I never thought that something like this would be possible. NYE has always been fun for gamers because it’s a night where you have a widely accepted excuse to stay up and game, but there’s never been an event in the mainstream that’s actually built around that tradition. This is just my ultimate NYE Fortnite LAN party with some of my best friends and a few surprises that I hope we as a community can have a lot of fun with.
Ninja will host the event on his Twitch channel in partnership with his sponsor, Red Bull.
Fortnite’s battle royale mode placed it on the map just over one year ago when one million players joined the battle bus for the first time on launch day. Since then the mode has broken numerous gaming records, and almost completely wiped PUBG off the board. Epic Games recently announced that more than 78 million people played Fortnite in August!
Fortnite’s battle royale success also ‘forced’ gaming giants like Call of Duty and Battlefield to add a battle royale mode alongside the multiplayer experience. Looking back over 2018’s news, there is no doubt that Fortnite placed gaming on the map in a new way.
Everyone wants in on the success from talk show hosts like Ellen Degeneres to international music stars. It was the latter that spurred Ninja’s success when he hosted a livestream and pop superstar Drake dropped in. Ninja broke the Twitch record for the most-viewed stream by a single player and since that fateful day in March he hasn’t looked back.
The New Year’s Eve Fortnite stream with Ninja will be the first of its kind and another entertainment milestone under the belt for gaming.
