Collaborations are always exciting, especially when Marvel is involved in some way. Now, League of Legends fans and comic book fans, in general, can look forward to League of Legends comics, as Marvel has teamed up with developer Riot Games to bring the world and its rich lore to the graphic novel format.
Riot Games isn’t new to the art of comics, as they have published quite a few panels on their website, which you can check out here if you didn’t know about them. However, Marvel and Riot’s teaming up means the first full-length comic will make its way to fans in May 2019 and it is, you guessed it, an origin story featuring Ashe.
Every League of Legends player out there knows Ashe. She was one of the first 40 heroes to release with the game. The first League of Legends comic will be called League of Legends: Ashe: Warmother and in a Press Release, Marvel explains that: “This complete collection will be the culmination of a series of monthly graphic novels based on the hit game that will be available on digital platforms beginning Wednesday, December 19!”.
Riot Games’ Odin Austin Shafer will make his comic book debut as the writer, Cardinal Rae will provide the lettering and the artist will be none-other than Nina Vakueva. This is quite an exciting venture and I, for one, can’t wait to have one in my hand. We don’t know much about the story so far, except for one paragraph, which reads:
League of Legends: Ashe: Warmother will follow the journey of one of the original League of Legends champions, the Iceborn warrior Ashe, who struggles with her role as a leader for her people in the world of Runeterra and her mother’s fanatical expectations.
Further, C.B. Cebulski, the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel, had this to say about the collaboration with Riot.
Many fans of the Marvel Universe and comics share their interests and passion for storytelling with the gaming community. League of Legends’ is one of the most well-known games in the industry, and their unique world and extensive roster of rich characters and are a perfect fit for comic books. We’re excited to partner with Riot and help build the League of Legends Universe for fans and players around the world.
Don’t worry, you won’t see some League of Legends characters suddenly appear in an Avengers movie or anything like that. However, wouldn’t it be great to see some kind of cameo from Deadpool appear in League of Legends just for the fun of it? Yes, yes it would.
