It has been rumoured that Facebook was working on a dedicated video-calling device for a while now.
This device was said to be Facebook’s entry into the smart-home device industry. Well, Facebook finally announced it and it is dubbed “Facebook Portal” and packed with cool features and comes in different sizes too.
Portal will come in two sizes. The smaller model features a 10-inch, 1280×800 PPI display and Portal Plus is a 15-inch, 1920×1080 PPI display. The device is all about making it easier to connect with the best people in your life which is the core of Portal’s design.
The device has a built-in smart camera which is able to pan and zoom across the room automatically. It also has a smart noise filter that makes sound clearer and minimizes background noise to enhance the conversation you are having. Portal supports Facebook and Messenger and can call up to seven people at a time. Best of all, you don’t need to own a Portal device as it acts as an alternative to the usual Facebook video call.
Probably the best feature of Portal is that it has Amazon Alexa built into it. You can simply say “Hello Portal, call xyz” and the device will make a call. It also features all the smart features of Alexa such as the weather, calendar, news, sports and much more. It also has Spotify and a range of other apps that turn it into a home gadget. All videos and conversations are also encrypted for your security.
While Facebook Portal will probably not launch here, you could import it when it launches next month. The device starts at $199 and goes up to $349 for the 15-inch model. If you buy one of each then you can get both for $298. If you are into these home devices and love Alexa then this is the combination of both and will make a fine addition to your collection.
