25 Years of DOOM: Co-Creator to Release Sequel to the 1993 Original

Every kid whose parents weren’t looking, was playing DOOM 25 years ago. It has been one of the most successful gaming franchises of our lifetime and, after 25 years, the original is getting a sequel.

As part of its quarter-century celebrations, the co-creator of the franchise – John Romero – has blessed fans of the bloody and brutal gaming franchise with an unofficial sequel to the original 1993 DOOM game. This free megawad is called SIGIL and will contain 9 single-player and 9 deathmatch levels. It will be released in February 2019 and if you’d like to play this unofficial sequel to the original, then you’ll need to own the original version of the game. John Romero explains the decision to make this megawad as a sequel to the original 1993 game.

For me, making this whole episode was a labor of love and a reminder of all the amazing times that we had at id working on the original. I was fortunate to be a part of such a great team and a foundational game.

DOOM was first released for MS-DOS and Macintosh back in 1993. Since then many different games, a movie, and a massive fanbase have kept the franchise alive for the past 25 years. The latest version of the game was released in 2017, with DOOM VFR – the first time the franchise entered into the virtual reality gaming market. The game is playable on PlayStation VR and HTC Vive.

Other than video games, DOOM has had a massive impact on pop culture. A movie was released in 2005, which starred Dwayne Johnson as Asher “Sarge” Mahonin. The movie was a massive box office bomb, but it doesn’t seem to have done the DOOM franchise any lasting damage as it’s still going strong after 25 years. A new movie adaptation of the DOOM franchise is currently underway, with it set to be released in 2019.

Will you be playing the unofficial sequel created by John Romero?

I love everything pop culture. Disney is my life. I was born in the same year as the Internet. I solemnly swear that I am up to no good. Togepi is my Buddy.
