Captain Marvel is flying into theatres on 8 March 2019. Now it has been revealed that once it’s made its cinematic rounds, it will be the first Disney+ exclusive. The streaming service, planned to be released by Disney later this year, seems to have set its sights on big goals.
Disney’s streaming service will apparently be pushing hard for Disney+ content that is exclusively hosted on the service. Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, has told investors that the company plans to cancel its current $140 million-rate in licensing revenue, shifting its focus to making content that will become Disney+ exclusives. He went on to tell investors that the first Disney+ exclusive would be the upcoming Captain Marvel movie and the company plans to completely withhold the movie’s license from its partners.
Captain Marvel is only the first Disney+ exclusive movie, with the company’s CEO noting that creatives across all of the Disney sub-brands are creating content specifically for the Disney streaming service that is expected to launch sometime this year. These Disney sub-brands include Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. So we could possibly be seeing a lot of Disney+ exclusive content, covering different stories and genres.
We have a number of creative engines across our company, many of which are dedicating their time and talents to develop content for the Disney+ platform. Many are the same innovators driving the prolific success of Disney, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel. We look forward to leveraging National Geographic for even more content on Disney+.
As part of Disney’s 21 Century Fox purchase, the company will gain ownership of National Geographic’s magazine as well as its associated TV division.
With a ton of Disney, as well as Disney sub-brands content being released this year, we’re excited to see what makes it onto Disney+ as exclusives. Not a lot of other information is currently available for the upcoming streaming service in terms of launch, pricing structure or content. So, we will all have to wait and see. Until then, have another look at the latest TV spot for the upcoming Captain Marvel movie to make you excited for its upcoming cinematic release.
