For the past 15 years, publisher Activision has been pushing out a new Call of Duty game each year, rotating developers Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer to do so. Sometimes it worked out, while other times I can’t help but feel as if some development decisions didn’t go over so well, for example, Black Ops 4 not having a single player campaign. Now, a new report suggests that Black Ops 5 will be released in 2020 and feature a full story campaign.
A report by Kotaku claims that multiple sources say Treyarch will be taking over development of Black Ops 5 after a “major upheaval” at Activision. This will only give Treyarch two years instead of the regular three years to create the new Black Ops 5. Raven and Sledgehammer was supposed to do the Call of Duty for 2020 after Activision switched things up. These developers were working on “a Call of Duty game set during the Cold War”, but it seems things have changed.
These studios will now serve as support for Treyarch according to multiple sources from Kotaku. Apparently, the project was “a mess” thanks to the tension between the Sledgehammer and Raven employees.
Developer Infinity Ward is likely working on Modern Warfare 4 but this change means that if the next CoD (likely to be revealed at E3 this year) is Modern Warfare and the report is correct, we will see a new Black Ops one year sooner than expected.
