October is Breast Cancer Awareness month for those of you who didn’t know. Our thoughts always go out to those affected by breast cancer or who knows someone who does. I personally know two people fighting against breast cancer and it is lovely to see a big publisher like Blizzard doing something. In the biggest single donation by a corporation in a single year, the publisher has made a $12.7 million donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. That’s R181 million at the current Dollar to Rand exchange rate.
Early this year, Blizzard sold their first Overwatch charity skin in the form of Pink Mercy. Through the sale of these skins and “accompanying themed apparel”, the massive donation is possible. In a post explaining talking about the donation, Blizzard thanks everyone who participated. Then, the publisher revealed that it is the “largest donation made by a corporate partner in a single year in the 25-year history of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
In the spirit of transparency, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation shared some insights on how these funds are being used. The funds are used to support research into treating, preventing and understanding of breast cancer.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation outlined the research grants (25 of them) which gets distributed to studies in several research fields focusing on both treatment and diagnosis. Check out the chart below.
There’s also the Precision Prevention Initiative, which is explained as:
Launched with support from Blizzard Entertainment, BCRF will fuel innovative prevention research to reduce the incidence of breast cancer, including creating new tools and tests for improved screenings and diagnostics. These programs will advance the understanding of inherited risk and pursue population-based genetic risk assessment to help those deemed at risk before the disease takes place.
The initiative will begin later this month when BCRF will convene a “think tank” of breast cancer research specialists to design this year’s Request for Proposals—grants given to select studies aimed at addressing breast cancer prevention with both short- and long-term milestones. After the process ends in March, BCRF will distribute awards over three years in research funding for clinical and laboratory studies.
Without a doubt, this is some awesome news and it is always great to see a big publisher stepping up like this.
