Borderlands 3 Review Build Had Technical Issues on PC Including Save Corruption

Our Borderlands 3 review roundup went live yesterday detailing all the current scores for the game. They are looking quite good, give or take one or two negatives ones. While we did not get a chance to review the game early, it might have been for the best. Reports have come to light that media who reviewed the game suffered from some nasty technical issues on PC to the point where one outlet’s save was corrupted.

Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who did not receive a code either for some reason, revealed in a report that 2K’s process for Borderlands 3 reviews was bizarre. The publisher did not send US media actual copies of the game. Instead, they gave them Epic Game Store accounts with the game attached to it.

According to the review build in question, it was still a “work-in-progress” version, something never experienced before in media. 2K Games and Gearbox Software have never done this in the past.

Polygon described the situation;

2K Games and Gearbox didn’t send out review codes for Borderlands 3. Instead, they set reviewers up with new Epic Games Store accounts with the game unlocked, and gave us a few warnings about the game being a work in progress. They asked us to stay away from the DirectX 12 implementation, for example, and told us that our progress in these builds may or may not carry over to the final game.

2K Games and Gearbox Software weren’t joking around when they explained the game having a few technical issues. Polygon states that the team ran into various technical issues including random crashes, and one crash that resulted in a corrupted save and the player losing six hours of game time.

The issues were not experienced across the board, however. Current Borderlands 3 reviews simply did not mention any technical problem with the game, but perhaps they just left them out.

With Borderlands 3 releasing on Friday, we will have to wait and see how things turn out for the current PC build. Hopefully, it is running smoothly and all technical issues experienced in the review build have been ironed out. Still, if you are concerned, perhaps hang on for a while.
