Black Ops 4 Server Downgrades & South African Blackout Server Issues

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 released ten days ago, and so far, the game has seen tremendous success. Not only did it earn Activision $500 million in just three days, but it also broke several records. For South African players, the biggest drawback currently is Blackout server issues, namely waiting for long periods of time to get a full lobby.

Treyarch has now responded to the Blackout server issues, as well as to the concern that the multiplayer servers currently run at only a third of the send rate when compared to the beta.

In a recent post on Reddit, Treyarch confirmed that they’re aware of the Blackout server issues in specific countries and that they plan to address the problem in a future update.

To our players experiencing trouble starting full Blackout and MP matches in certain areas at specific times of the day (parts of South America, South Africa, Australia, Asia, and the Middle East): we hear you.

Treyarch plans to solve the Blackout server issues by connecting players to the closest populated server, without it negatively impacting other players on that server. The same solution will apply to multiplayer server issues.

When we played the Black Ops 4 beta in September, the multiplayer servers on PS4 ran at a send rate of 60hz, but then it dropped to 20hz when the game launched. Naturally, this has a significant impact on gameplay, and players have been very vocal about it. Some have also noticed that because it takes servers so much longer to send updates to players’ platforms, that it sometimes also confuses the matchmaking feature.

Yesterday, Treyarch rolled out a minor update for Black Ops 4 that addresses network performance and stability issues. They also talked about the server downgrade issue.

According to the post, Treyarch’s first aim on launch day was to ensure that the multiplayer servers were stable. Every other network issue came second to that, and Treyarch is only now looking to address other problems.

We’ve also noticed a lot of discussion around network performance over the past couple of days and wanted to take a moment to address this directly. Now that we’re past the initial launch of the game, we are focusing on fine-tuning network performance around the globe, using the real-world data that we have collected.

Treyarch will roll out updates over the next two weeks that will address the network setup. You might recall that prior to the Black Ops 4 launch, Treyarch said much the same in response to PC gamers’ question about the framerate cap. During the beta, Treyarch capped it to 90 fps, and on launch day to 120 fps. The next step is to raise it to 144 fps and finally to uncapped.

Black Ops 4 players can expect continued updates from Treyarch that will continue to improve the multiplayer, Blackout, and Zombie modes.
