Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Will Be Unplayable Without a Hefty 50 GB Day One Update

Black Ops 4 PC

If you are planning on purchasing a disc-based copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 this Friday and you have internet issues such as slow speed or data cap then you may need to wait to play the game.

According to Activision’s Black Ops support page, the game has a hefty day one update which is required in order to even boot to the main menu. While this is expected due to it being a multiplayer-based experience, the 50 GB (yes, it is flipping 50 GBs) day one update will be an issue for those who have net restrictions.

According to the support page, the update is indeed 50 GB big but there is light at the end of the fibre cable. Activision states that you will only need to download around 30% of the update in order to play Blackout. The rest of the update will be for the zombies and multiplayer mode.

Before playing for the first time, players will need to download and install a day one update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This update must be installed completely in order to access Multiplayer, Zombies, and Specialist Headquarters. Blackout is fully playable once installation is about 30% complete (approximately 16-20 GB).

For an optimized download experience, players should have 112 GB of free hard drive space – note that this is not the size of the download, it is the amount of space required to complete the installation process. The final installation footprint will be approximately 55 GB. In order to play Blackout before the full installation is complete, select “Update to Latest Version” when the prompt appears.

The day one update package is roughly 50 GB. Download speeds may vary based on region, platform, connection type, and the speed of your internet connection.

This means that come Friday, 12 October, you will need to put time and cap aside to download Black Ops 4’s day one patch before you can do anything online. This is also not the first time this has happened. Last year’s Call of Duty: WWII was also blocked behind a day one patch and we should just get used to this. Although it was a fraction of the size.
