Going through the PlayStation Store the other night, I realized just how comprehensive the list of free-to-play games has actually got. Sure, it has been a few years since the launch of the console, but you have to acknowledge that if you are tight for cash, then chances are there is something on this free list of games to play. Here are a few games I have personally played and recommend.
Ditching the typical open world MMO mechanics for a more streamlined selection of hubs, Neverwinter offers hundreds of hours of RPG action as you explore the various lands in the Dungeons and Dragons universe. Various character classes, hundreds of items, and of course, the multiplayer aspect of the game, will turn Neverwinter into a must-have free MMO for all RPG fans. The PS4 version of the game comes with all DLC and expansions released to date so there is, even more, content waiting for you to explore.
Paladins might be a cheap ripoff of Overwatch, but it is actually not half bad. This team-based shooter includes some of the most creative characters I have ever seen in gaming, even though they are all mostly clones of Overwatch heroes. Still, Paladins is a lot of fun and given that it is free, you really cannot complain. The game features a unique inventory system that lets you build the best loadout for your heroes to take with you into battle, and while you are fighting over zones and escorting the payload, you can unlock new skins, emotes, and other cosmetic items to show off to the world.
Skyforge is a stunning MMO that I recently got into. It features a fantastic combat system that sways away from the usual time-based attack system found in some MMOs, and instead incorporates a faster combo system that lets you chain together attacks and skills to perform awesome moves. The game features 14 classes which can be unlocked with some heavy grinding (free-to-play things), or you can just stick to the starter classes which are great all-around. As you venture across the game you can also change your class at any time which eliminates that fear of investing hours into each character you create.
Let it Die
This Dark Souls re-imagining might not have the polish and budget as the From Software team did but they still managed to create a wonderful interpretation of an RPG hack-and-slash. You take on the role of a custom character as you fight through the deadly tower obtaining new weapons, gear, and using your resources to survive. When you die, however, your “death data” is circulated across the server to other players and you appear as an opponent for them to face. While the game does have some steep purchases, it is not a case of you being forced to pay for anything.
MOBA fans would know that Smite has been around for a long time now, and as much as there is also the likes of Dota and LoL, if find myself drawn into Smite much more than the others. Smite has all the MOBA mechanics you would expect to find in a game of its type, but where it stands on its own is in its unique third person camera system, and Gods which are essentially the heroes in the game. These Gods are based on various mythological figures across different religions and cultures, and if you are a fan of this sort of thing like I am, then you will enjoy discovering them all and mastering them in the game.
Warframe is probably the oldest free-to-play game on the PS4 as it launched back in 2013 when the console released. That is to say, it is anything but redundant as it has been updated with new content on a monthly basis as well new Frames and quests that have been added along the way. The devs have even taken down some of the game’s biggest features like the parkour and rebuilt it from the ground up. It shows the dedication where you can invest time in a game and get the most out of it thanks to the support from the creators. Later this year Warframe will also be getting its first ever open world area to explore, which will surely make the game even better than ever.
Those looking for a free-to-play FPS really don’t have much choice in the matter. At least there is Planetside 2. Think of it as a massive war between two factions that takes a few days to complete. Thousands of players fighting it out for zones as you try and make your team proud. Planetside 2 is very different from other conventional shooters and that is what makes it so unique. It even holds the world record for the biggest online battle ever to take place in gaming. That is how huge the fights are in the game and just how small you feel when facing off against the other two factions fighting for control.
There you have my selection of games. What free-to-play games do you enjoy playing on PS4? Let us know in the comments below.
