Apple held it’s March event at the Steve Jobs Theatre, where the company’s CEO Tim Cook took the audience and the world watching via live-streaming through all the various services the company’s focusing on. These included services that have been around for a while like iCloud, Apple Pay (not available in South Africa), as well as new services like Apple News (not available for South Africa) and revealing Apple TV+, which is Apple’s brand new entertainment subscription service.
Apple TV+ will be part of the brand-new Apple TV app, which has been completely upgraded. The new app will feature content curated from TV channels and satellite services you pay for, subscription services like Hulu, iTunes movies and series and the new original content hosted on the Apple TV+ service.
The new service was backed by some serious Hollywood royalty. These included legendary directors Steven Spielberg, Sophia Coppola, J.J. Abrams, M. N. Shyamalan, and Ron Howard.
Steven Spielberg joined the audience at the Steve Jobs Theatre to talk about an original show he is creating for Apple TV+, which will be based on a retro sci-fi magazine called Amazing Stories. He was followed by Jennifer Anniston, Reece Witherspoon, and Steve Carell who will be premiering an original show called The Morning Show for Apple TV+ which will delve into the crazy world of American morning shows. It will also explore hard-hitting topics like the inequality between women and men in the workplace. Other stars like Jason Momoa and Big Bird also spoke about new original shows they’re starring in for the upcoming new service from Apple.
But the highlight of the Apple event (which had Tim Cook in tears at the end) was when Oprah Winfrey herself arrived on stage to talk about two new documentaries she is working on for Apple TV+.
The one documentary called Toxic Labour (working title) will explore the harm caused by sexual harassment in the workplace. The other documentary from Oprah will explore mental illnesses and how to remove the shame and stigma. Oprah also announced a new book club feature she will be doing exclusively for Apple TV+, where she will be streaming interviews with some of the best authors in the world. Oprah mentioned that Apple is such a great partner because of the company’s global reach.
Because they’re in billions of pockets ya’ll!!
The ad-free, subscription service is set to launch in “fall 2019” which is likely to be sometime in September 2019 in over 100 countries. No news yet in terms of pricing.
