Over the weekend, we reported that 20th Century Fox trademarked the name Alien: Blackout for a video game. 20th Century Fox is the IP holder of the Alien franchise in case you didn’t know. This got fans quite excited about a new Alien game and now, it seems like we won’t have to wait long. An Alien: Blackout announcement has been teased for the upcoming Game Awards 2018, which kicks off on 7 December at 03:30 AM South African time.
First up, it is important to note that this will likely not be Alien: Isolation 2, but reportedly an online shooter developed by Cold Iron Studios. The developer was acquired by FoxNext, a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox in January this year and on the developer’s website, they mention that the team is currently “working on a new PC and console shooter based on the Alien franchise.”
So why do we think that an Alien: Blackout announcement will take place at the Game Awards 2018? Well, The Game Awards chief, Geoff Keighley, teased something on Twitter that is tough to ignore. The image says that “Worlds will change” sporting a font that Alien fans should instantly recognize. Mr Keighley also recently update his Twitter profile with an banner image with the same message which means it is probably something important. Combine this with the recent Alien: Blackout trademark, and there’s definitely reason for excitement.
The font looks very much like the one used by Weyland-Yutani, which is, of course, the evil corporation in the Alien franchise which wants to profit from the deadly xenomorphs.
That’s about all we know at the moment and although it might not be what we wanted (Alien: Isolation 2), it will be exciting to see what Cold Iron Studios have been working on. It could very well be a Destiny 2 type of game or even a competitive shooter where one team takes on the role of Weyland-Yutani troops, while the other plays with xenomorphs, but that’s just speculation from me.
We will know soon enough and if you plan to get up early to watch the Game Awards 2018 take place, then you can watch it on the official YouTube channel here.
What do you hope to see from the Alien: Blackout announcement? Let us know in the comment section below.
