Monster Hunter Movie In the Works and Being Shot in South Africa

Monster Hunter Movie

We all love the Monster Hunter franchise and the latest entry, Monster Hunter: World is quite an addictive and awesome experience. Many gamers out there have probably also seen at least a couple of Resident Evil films. Now, we know that a Monster Hunter movie is in production and best of all, pieces of it are filmed in South Africa.

The Monster Hunter Movie

Let’s get straight into the details. The first thing you need to know is that Milla Jovovich is starring in the movie and her husband, Paul W. S. Anderson is directing, along with Jeremy Bolt. The screenplay is also written by Mr Anderson. You may have seen some of his work with Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

Photography for the film kicked off this month in South Africa as well as Namibia and by the looks of Milla’s Instagram, they are in South Africa right now. Check out Milla’s comment on the Monster Hunter movie and two images below.

First day of filming on #monsterhuntermovie based on the epic game #monsterhunterworld! As you can see, my character is glamorous as usual!😉 Here’s the make up progression by the awesome @kerry_skelton_ from beginning of dirt/wounds, to the finished product. I’ve been training for this day since February, so definitely excited to start production! #rangersleadtheway #strongwomen #capetowndiary

Monster Hunter Plot

Capcom has shared a bit of information about the Monster Hunter movie including first details about the plot. First up, the movie is “tentatively dubbed” MONSTER HUNTER”. The story revolves around two heroes (one obviously being Milla) from different worlds. They come together to defeat shared dangers in the form of the magnificent and deadly monsters that inhabit the land.

For fans of the Monster Hunter franchise, there seem to be some cool nods and familiar faces in the film. Capcom revealed that through the movie, views will “make new discoveries and encounter familiar faces and beloved characters” from the games, specifically mentioning the Admiral.

The Monster Hunter series Producer, PyozoTsujimoto, explains that:

After living and breathing in the universe of Monster Hunter for 14 years we are thrilled with enormous anticipation to see our creations adapted for a theatrical release. Monster Hunter’s fan base has exploded over the past year with the runaway success of the game Monster Hunter: World. It is our hope long-time fans and new alike will join us on this exciting exploration of the Monster Hunter universe.

Video game to film adaptations are yet to impress me too much. The Resident Evil movies weren’t brilliant, but still fun to watch. Still, I can’t help but get excited for a movie based on a video game franchise.
