Telltale Games is Shutting Down Following Mass Layoffs

Telltale Games is shutting down

Telltale Games have brought us some of the best story-driven experiences in gaming history. Today, this gamer reflects on all the wonderful experiences, such as The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us. It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Telltale Games is shutting down. It is, without a doubt, heartbreaking.

Telltale officially announced the closure yesterday on Twitter and noted that this difficult decision. The decision was made to begin a “majority studio closure” due to a year “marked by insurmountable challenges”. At the moment, only 25 employees remain on to “fulfil the company’s obligations to its board and partners” as part of a skeleton crew. Most of the employees have already been dismissed.

Telltale Games is Shutting Down

Telltale CEO, Pete Hawley, issued the following statement:

It’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.

Telltale will issue further comments regarding its product portfolio in the coming weeks.

Things get even worse as reports are coming in suggesting that the employees who were laid off won’t receive severance pay and that the skeleton crew “fulfilling obligations” are working on the Minecraft Story Mode project for Netflix. According to reports (for example from US Gamer), the final season of The Walking Dead might end after the second episode is released, according to their sources familiar with the whole ordeal.

We will have to wait and see if any other projects get taken over by another publisher or developer. At the moment, The Wolf Among Us Season 2, the Stranger Things title and more might never see the light of day.
