While the world is busy fighting over 4K and who has the best lineup, Atari is sitting in the back busy developing what I hope to consider a great industry contender next year. The Ataribox is, well, Atari's new project and the more we learn about it, the more we are leaning towards it. New details have been released on the project which points to some decent internal hardware and a price range.

According to GamesBeat, the Ataribox creator and general manager, Feargal Marc, said that the console will begin its crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in the coming weeks and launch by mid-2018. The console will release with a large catalogue of classic games as well as some of the biggest games out today. As for the power inside the console, the Ataribox will run a custom AMD processor with a Radeon graphics chip.

All this will be brought together using a custom Linux OS that will let the console do various things. Besides running the games built for the console, the Ataribox will be capable of streaming music, running apps, browsing the web, and even PC games on it. Keep in mind that these PC games will not be triple-A high-end games.

We know right now that the Ataribox will feature HD support, an internal storage option, as well as other standard console features like WLAN. If anything, the Ataribox sounds like it is going to be a great piece of hardware to have around the house that will not only let you play classic and new games but also do various things on it that turns it into a media box too. According to the latest information, the console will sell for $259 – $299 depending on your hardware configuration. This obviously points to a different storage option on the console which will result in a different price tag.

Does this sound like something you would buy? Let us know in the comments below.
