PUBG devs not happy about Fortnite Battle Royale – Might consider further action

Just because your game looks the same and has the same gameplay does not mean it is a clone. I mean it is 2017, who cares am I right? Well, it seems that Epic Games might be getting themselves into some trouble over their upcoming Fortnite: Battle Royale. According to an email, I received this morning, Bluehole Inc, developers of probably the biggest games this decade responded to Fortnite's mode with some growing concerns. In the email, it states that while Epic Game has been developing the game for some time, it comes across as if the developer is trying to piggyback off the success of PUBG.

“We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game,” said Chang Han Kim, Vice President and Executive Producer for Bluehole, Inc. “After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.”

“We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press,” Chang Han Kim continues. “This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right.”

As I said before, it is 2017 and games will be cloned, and in theory, you cannot own a genre but at least you can make an effort to make the game stand out or vary from what you are using as a template design. Fortnite's Battle Royale mode, according to the developers at Bluehole Inc. bares “many similarities” according to Chang Han, of which have been brought to his attention thanks to the PUBG community. In closing, the developer said that they might contemplate further action in the coming weeks regarding this issue.

If you ask me, competition is healthy but then again you cannot blatantly copy someone's game. I am yet to get my hands on the Fortnite Battle Royale mode, of which I will be doing this week and we will give you some feedback on how well it plays and how it copies PUBG.
