The one thing I always tend to miss about PC gaming when playing on the Xbox One is the freedom of movement and accuracy a gaming mouse and keyboard provides. It is admittedly, one of the reasons I found Halo Wars 2 to be mediocre because playing an RTS with a controller simply didn’t feel right.
If you feel the same way I do and you are hoping for mouse and keyboard support on the Xbox One, then we’ve got some great news for you. Over the weekend at PAX West, the corporate VP of Xbox and Windows gaming platform, Mike Ybarra, confirmed that mouse and keyboard support is “definitely coming” to the Xbox One.
As reported by GameSpot and as you can see here on Twitter, the feature will happen. However, there has always been some debate about how such a feature should be implemented, seeing as it would be unfair for gamers using a controller to go up against those using a mouse and keyboard, especially in first-person shooter titles.
Windows Central reports that Mr Ybarra commented on the issue, stating that:
“We have to be very smart in how we do that. We'll leave it a lot up to developer choice. A lot of people tweet me and say, 'You can't do this because of fairness,' and we understand that. We run two platforms; the Windows platform and the Xbox platform.” – Source
It is still unclear when this feature will launch and which games will be supported when it does. However, Mr Ybarra did mention that it is up to the developers to decide if they want to add mouse and keyboard support to their specific game.
Mr Ybarra talks about gamer choice and competitive titles:
“If you have a competitive game, people probably are going to want the choice to say I'll play with other keyboard and mouse people or I'll play only with controller people, or that I'll play with any of those. So you'll see our first games supporting keyboard and mouse soon; I can't announce what that is, but soon. And then based on developer interest, they'll choose to do keyboard and mouse going forward, or not.” – Source
Hopefully, we will see mouse and keyboard support on the Xbox One soon. It could be another amazing feature if done properly and if the playing field in competitive titles remains even by giving users a choice about who they want to play with.
