On Sunday, we reported that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds reached a new concurrent player milestone and almost knocked Dota 2 off the top spot. Somewhere between yesterday morning and this morning it finally happened – PUBG overtook Dota 2's concurrent player count:
- 838,519 Dota 2
It's a remarkable achievement when you take into account that Dota 2 is a Valve game and that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is still only an Early Access game on Steam. I can't remember the last time a game not only knocked Dota 2 from the top spot but also beat all three Valve-developed games. The popular Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has been yapping at PUBG's heels for some time now, with Team Fortress 2 struggling to stay in the race. Let's also not forget that unlike Dota 2, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is not a free-to-play, making its success something phenomenal.
“#1 on @steam_games! Thank you all, once again, for the continuing support you are showing the #PUBG team <3” tweeted the developer a few hours ago. And then the PUBG servers went offline. “The servers are down, and we are investigating it. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
Looking through the last few Steam reviews, it seems that there is some unhappiness surfacing in the land of promise, and it all relates to bans. Everyone unanimously agrees that it's the best games currently on the market – and they also seem to agree that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has an unfair ban system – especially when an offence relates to Streamers.
Earlier this month, Bluehole released the Code of Conduct for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, with a very strong emphasis on what they constituted as harassment. Reading through the complaints on the games' Steam page it looks like they are enforcing those rules to a T.
Players have to understand, that with a game this big the developer has to follow strict rules to keep the game fair and pleasant for its millions of players. On the other hand, few things can stifle an online game's fun as overbearing admins and rules. It's a fine line and we have to give Bluehole enough time to find that perfect harmony.
